Red Read’s life takes an alarming turn when his mother sells him to an infamous smuggler plying his trade off the north-west coast in the closing days of the 19th century. From terrifying encounters with cut-throat pirates to battling the forces of nature in a tropical typhoon, Red is in for the adventure of a lifetime.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

'...this exciting, refreshingly politically incorrect tale … of smuggling, pirating and general blood-thirsty adventuring … is a thrilling, old-fashioned highly satisfying "blood and guts" Boys’ Own adventure.’ Magpies

'Jam packed with action and adventure...' Reading Time

'Like all good pirate stories, it's the sort of book you can't put down and end up reading under the blankets with your torch when you're supposed to be asleep.' The West Australian

'...[a] frightening and exhilarating adventure aboard The Black Dragon.’ Cockburn Gazette

'The action is nicely balanced against the Captain's ethics and his tender care of young Red ... Jorgensen's storytelling is gripping' Farm Weekly

    Norman Jorgensen

Multi-award-winning writer Norman Jorgensen was born in Broome and lived a happy, Huckleberry Finn-like childhood. He has worked in the book trade for much of his life, and in his spare time, he loves to read, travel and take photographs. He now lives in a hundred-year-old house near the city with his wife, Jan Nicholls, a children’s book devotee. Norman began writing when in primary school and had a story read on the ABC Radio Argonauts Club, but it took many years before his first picture book, In Flanders Fields, beautifully illustrated by Brian Harrison-Lever, was published. Norman has since published three novels – Jack’s Island, The Smuggler’s Curse and his latest, The Wreckers’ Revenge – and two picture books with local illustrator James Foley – The Last Viking and The Last Viking Returns.
