Black Swan bring Lighthouse Girl to the stage

The world premiere of Hellie Turner’s The Lighthouse Girl is set to take place in Albany, the birthplace of the much-loved Anzac story. Based on Dianne Wolfer’s acclaimed books, Lighthouse Girl and Light Horse Boy, the play will premiere at the Albany Entertainment Centre on 22 April before its Perth season at the State Theatre Centre of WA from 28 April to 14 May 2017.

The 2017 PIAF Perth Writers Festival is almost at our doorstep and we are counting down the days! Running on 23–26 February, the festival celebrates the world of literature and the creative talents of writers and artists. The program offers a smorgasbord of workshops, seminars, panel discussions, family activities and free events. I’m just back from a busy two days in Melbourne attending the APA’s ‘Indies Forum’ and catching up with our Penguin Random House distributors. As a member of the APA’s Independent Publishers Committee I participated in the forum, which drew an audience of around 100, evenly split between independent booksellers and publishers. It was a great day, and we had some robust discussion around a number of issues that affect us equally.

WA graphic novel on Aurealis shortlist

James Foley is on the Aurealis Awards shortlist for the third time. Brobot, his book for junior readers, has been shortlisted from over 800 entries Australia-wide in the ‘best graphic novel / illustrated work’ category.

WA poet on gold medal longlist

Dennis Haskell’s poetry collection Ahead of Us has been longlisted for the ALS Gold Medal. The ALS Gold Medal is awarded annually by the Association for the Study of Australian Literature for an outstanding literary work in the preceding calendar year. Haskell said it was a bit unusual for a poetry book to get listed.
