Fremantle Press author Anne-Louise Willoughby brings her biography of painter Nora Heysen back onto home turf with a number of events in Perth and surrounds

September 5, 2019

Author Anne-Louise Willoughby has spent the past few months speaking at some of Australia’s most prestigious galleries, museums and memorials after the publication of her biography of Australia’s first female official war artist, Nora Heysen: A Portrait, and her event schedule shows no signs of thinning out.

Over the next three months, Anne-Louise will be appearing much closer to home (albeit with a brief trip to New South Wales), with a number of events booked in for Western Australia including a talk at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at UWA, the Karrakatta Club’s Literary Lyceum and the opening of the Lester Prize for Portraiture.

Nora Heysen: A Portrait explores the life and work of an extraordinary painter. Nora was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize, and a major retrospective of her work was held at the NGV in Melbourne earlier this year.

Anne-Louise said, ‘There has been so much interest in Nora since my book was released this March, which is so exciting for this important Australian artist. It’s also really pleasing, and reassuring, that the book has been well received by the curators of our national art institutions.

‘I’ve spoken at the War Memorial, the National Library, the NGV in Melbourne, the Art Gallery of South Australia and at the New England Regional Art Museum, and soon I’m off to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

‘I’m super thrilled that I will be speaking at home in Western Australia this October at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery among the recently opened Cosmopolitan exhibition. LWAG is home to the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art that holds significant Nora Heysen works. Then in November I will be part of the Lester Prize for Portraiture opening weekend events at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, which is another honour.’

More details on Anne-Louise’s upcoming events – including how to book – are below.
