Book trailers inspire computer savvy kids

Students at Rosalie Primary School teamed up with illustrator Chris Nixon and Emerging Arts Professional Kiri Falls to create a series of book trailers based on Fremantle Press books.

The trailers, which were released on the Fremantle Press YouTube channel today, were created by Year Four students as part of the 2010 Rosalie Writers’ Festival.

Year Four teachers Susanne Kidd and Tim Yates were thrilled with the results.

“The kids had a ball! Many of them have been beavering away at home on their own projects since,” said Yates.

The kids learnt how to make storyboards for film and to use basic video editing software to produce short videos for fifteen Fremantle Press books.

Rosalie students Samantha Zering, Hamish Edmondston and Riley Maurich said doing a book trailer made them think outside the box while Henry Lake said he liked making book trailers because they didn’t have to be like anyone else’s.

“You could be creative in a mad, crazy way,” said Lake.

Jacob Helgeby-Cook said he enjoyed making the book trailer because it felt like he helped make the book.

“I also liked making and sharing it with friends,” he said.

Students created trailers for Aussie Legends, Bawoo Stories, Beach Sports Car, Bush Secrets, Caterpillar and Butterfly, Crocodile Cake, Crow and the Waterhole, I want to be a Cricketer, Jake’s Gigantic List, Jake’s Monster Mess, Lighthouse Girl, Lilli and her Shadow, The Great Cold, The Other Bears, The Two Hearted Numbat and The World According to Warren.

“I am so impressed with what they’ve produced,” said Deputy Principal of Rosalie Primary School, Helen Krynen.

Rosalie Writers Festival runs from 18-21 May 2010 at Rosalie Primary School.
