Katy Watson-Kell, recipient of May Gibbs Fellowship

May Gibbs Fellowship awarded to Watson-Kell

1st February 2010

For the second year in a row, a Fremantle Press author will be taking up a writing residency courtesy of the May Gibbs Creative Time Residential Fellowships program.

Katy Watson-Kell, author of Mama’s Trippin’ and Juice, will spend three weeks in Adelaide’s Norwood Burrow.

While there she will be researching Indian hawkers, the history of Mount Gambier and the culture of the Dominican sisters living at the Cabra Dominican College during the 1950s. This is all part of her historical novel-in-progress currently titled Chloe.

Watson-Kell said she appreciates this wonderful opportunity to focus exclusively on her book.

“I’ve been researching Chloe since 2005 and this uninterrupted, creative time will bring the novel closer to completion,” said Watson-Kell.

Only 10 Australian authors or illustrators are awarded a May Gibbs CTR Fellowship each year. In 2009, Dianne Wolfer was awarded a Fellowship and undertook a one-month residency in Canberra.
