About the Book

In the proudly ancient Yolngu heartlands larrakitj were used to contain the bones of the deceased during mortuary ceremonies. Today, artists from Arnhem Land’s Buku-Larrnggay Mulka arts centre produce modern larrakitj for the education of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

Collected for a decade, the larrakitj collection of 110 Yolngu memorial poles from north-east Arnhem form a special part of the Kerry Stokes collection. This beautifully illustrated book features photos of the artworks and the artists with comprehensive biographies and stunning images of Arnhem Land.

‘We will continue to paint on larrakitj the designs that represent our spiritual foundation and essence. That is how it is.’ – Wanyubi Marika, Yirrkala

‘As outsiders we cannot expect to fathom Yolngu culture in an instant or even a lifetime, but it is my desire that this publication will set us on the path.’ – Kerry Stokes AC
